Hello Fans…… Lily here again!

Boy have I had a hard time getting back into shape.  I admit I added a few pounds over the holidays.  We had a lot of people here and I had to keep the floor clean.  I also need to help my human boys finish their dinner when mom and dad arent looking.

So anyway…… I was starting to look like an old dog….at the young age of 11.  I really dont like going for longs walks, as it interrupts my 16 hour nap schedule.  I needed to find something to get me into shape for the upcoming hunting season.  I found my new sport…..Water aerobics.  Yep, I going with the new rage for the aged.  I do my water aerobics in the pond every day.  Hopefully Ill be ready when the bell rings and the birds are ready to flush!

WOOF!

Training Tips For Floppy Ears – Treats

To Treat or Not to treat

Well you have successfully chosen your puppy.  Now the training phase begins.  The question is posed, should treats be utilized for motivation during training?  There are varying opinions on this subject. Some trainers say to use the insatiable appetite possessed by a pup or young dog.  Others say that using treats is amateurish and unneeded.

What a dog owner needs to look at when deciding whether or not to use treats, is how the treat will be used to motivate their pupil.  Using treats can be a great tool for getting the attention and motivating a pup or young dog.  There are different methods that can be used, in concert with treats to teach these young pupils how to respond appropriately to certain commands.  Once the pup understands and performs the command the motivating morsels can slowly be replaced with a soothing compliment.  After the performance is perfected in response to the current command, you can use the well know puppy prize for a head start on future skills.

What matters most when deciding how to proceed with your early training you need to look at what motivates your student.  If the answer is “treats” than play on your puppy’s love of kibble, milkbones, or hot dog chunks.  You can use their love for food to accomplish training goals with greater ease.

If you are still skeptical about the method of using food rewards for training then incorporate it for teaching at least one command.  Hopefully after using this style for one facet of your pup’s education you will be able to decide “to treat or not to treat.”

Soggy Acres Foster Guardian Program

Our kennel is growing at quite the pace.  What we have done in the past, and will be doing in the near future, is place dogs with families.  We call this our “Foster Guardian Program.”  The way the program is fairly simple.

- Once approved a family will get a puppy at 7 weeks of age, or an available older dog

- Soggy Acres Retrievers owns the dog and the family or individual enters into a contractual agreement.

- The contract ensures that both sides are protected should a problem arise.

- The dog will be trained to a basic hunting level, to include: Force fetched, collar conditioned, line steady, retrieving simple doubles and full obedience training.

- The yearly vet bills for normal maintenance will be paid by Soggy Acres Retrievers.

- Any vet bills arising from negligence on the host family or other injury will be paid by the Foster Guardian Family.

- The dog, we only do this with females, can be boarded at half price or $10 per day.  (when the dog is in heat the board is free)

- When it is time to breed the dog, after they have attained 2 years of age, they will be bred and the litter whelped at our kennel.

-Each time the dog comes into season we need to be notifed, regardless if we are breeding her on the cycle or not.

This program has worked out great for us so far.  Our foster families have provided us with loving homes for many of our pups.  We in turn have provided great working dogs for the families.

We may have a 3 yoa female available soon.  We will also have a puppy from our Maddie and Trooper litter, Josie and Wizard litter and our litter upcoming with Mojo.

Feel free to set up an appointment to discuss getting a fully trainind Soggy Dog!
