Ruffed Grouse Society Dinner

Robyn and I went to the ruffed grouse society dinner last night at the Milwaukee Athletic Club.  We actioned off two guide services to Blonhaven in Milton, WI.

The night was great except for one thing….we won a kringle and box of crackers.  Not exactly the new guns I envisioned where my name was in the raffle.

Oh well, we met some great folks and had great conversations.

The night was a great success in the big picture.

Hello All…… No news about Dixie yet…..  She does this to me every litter.  I will post as soon as she starts to whelp.

On another note Libbys pups are doing great.  This pic is of the wonderful mom dutifly taking care of her pups.

We set a record yesterday for hits on the blog….actually for the last four days in a row.  Yesterday we had 117 hits on the Soggy Dog Blog.  We aslo are going to double our best month for hits and be over 1700 for the month.

You keep reading and Ill keep typing.

Soggy Dog Hunt Tests and Training Blog

Our training is coming along well for the soggy dogs.  Pickett is entered and should be more than ready for his first Started Hunting Retriever test the weekend of April 25th and 26th at Bong Rec. in Kenosha County.  Mojo should finish her Started title this weekend.  Tory also has made the transition from pup to marking machine.  She is now 8 months old and showing the necessary progress to achieve her title.

Rommel starts his summer campaign this same weekend.  I am hopeful we will get his finished and Master Hunt titles done this summer.  If we can accomplish both titles we will transition our training to field trial marks and blinds.  But, that is a ways off as we need to achieve the task at hand.  Tom Waite of Dale Creek Gundogs will be running Rommel in the Master tests.  Remember that Rommel is Tri factored and has one of the nicest pedigrees in the country.  If you have a yellow, chocolate or black female he would be a great addition to your kennels gene pool.

Libbys Pups

Well the pups are coming along great.  They are starting to get up on all fours and walking…..albeit blind walking.  Libby is truely a great mother.  I still think the pups look like gargoyles at this stage.  Just look at the ear and imagine them perched on the wall of a midevil castle.

Dixie is officially due today…… which for her means nothing.  She normally takes her own time and has the pups on the worst possible day.  With Robyn and I attending a benefit for the Ruffed Grouse program that would be today.  Not to worry though….Dix is an old pro and we should be fine.

Soggy dog product review: Bumper Boy Derby Double

Soggy Dog Product Review

Bumper Boy Derby Double

bbderby

The Bumper Boy Derby Double dummy launching system has made training your canine champion much easier, as you can now simulate marked retrieves with the touch of a button.  The versatility of the Derby Double, combined with its light weight and superior electronics make it a must have for the avid dog trainer.

The unit starts with a mostly aluminum frame set up to be not only light weight, but stable when launching its two bumpers in one direction or as a double.  Swing out stakes on the bottom of all for sides let the unit anchor in the ground for consistent marks.  The unit has two options for launching the bumpers.  The first option is to leave the bumpers both to the same side.  This is great for training young dogs how to mark.  If the dog hangs up and has trouble you can merely launch a second bumper to the same fall area to help them accomplish their retrieve.  Once your training advances to multiple marked falls you can change the bumpers to launch in two different directions.

Changing the bumpers so they launch in two opposite directions is effortless. Simply remove the wing nuts, take off the end cap and slide off the nearest bumper.  Then slide the bumper back on facing the opposite directions.  Coupled with the quality electronics on the product, and the use of a .22 blank round to simulate a shot, dog training has just been made easier.

The only real weakness to the product is exposed wiring that connects the electrical components.  Care needs to be used with the unit to ensure the wiring does not get damaged.

Milford Hills Guide Job on 3/27/09

I went on a 20 pheasant guide job in the morning at Milford Hills.  I ran 6 dogs, including Lily, Josie, Mojo, Sadie, Nora and Pickett.

The weather was great and the birds were running.  The dogs did a great job.  Lily amazes me with her durability at the age or almost 11.  She just keeps on hunting.  Sadie was a dog possessed charging through the field.  She even beat Pickett to darn near each retrieve.  Josie shows boundless energy as she flies acorss the hunters.  Nora was Nora and hunted average.  Little Mojo continues to develop into a nice little gun dog.

Overall it was a great time.  The biggest fault I had in the day was my guidees buying beer after beer when I needed to leave.  I guess thats a good problem to have.
